Project Description
Continuing from the design, I chose to make Hiccup and his dragon Toothless. Throughout this process, I learnt an incredible variety of skills.
For Toothless, I had to understand how puppets work- the mechanics, the materials, the effect they have on story telling. I researched immersive children's theatre and experiences, as well as trying to understand the sensory aspects of what makes these shows appealing.
Toothless is made from carved upholster foam, held together with flexible leather joints, with scales and details made from leather, felt, latex and worbla.
For the costume for Hiccup, I wanted to try as many new technqiues as possible. From working with fur, learning leatherwork and following historical patterns, this proved to be effective.
The biggest achievement of this costume was the trim. Unable to find anything premade, I made my own inkle weaving loom, and wove four metres of trim myself.
